Albert J. Volpe Al Volpe (pronounced Volp) was born in 1914, son of John and Rose Volpe. He lived at 514 Magnolia Street in Beverly and was active in St. Stephens Church in Beverly. He attended "Mechanics School" in lieu of high school. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1930 at age 17. He joined the US Army in September of 1944 and served in Co K of the 114th Inf in WWII in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Germany, Australia, until October 1945. He earned the Bronze Star with 3 Oak Clusters at the Battle of the Bulge. He later served in Korea. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Army of Occupation Medal. When he returned to the US he served as Chief Warrant Officer at Fort Dix. He reported that he met Elvis Presley when he processed into the service. He retired in 1960 after a long career in the military. He met Dorothy Carr and married her in 1947. They bought a home on Peachtree Lane in Delanco. Al worked for the New Jersey Turnpike Commission. Al was a member of Beverly American Legion Post 115 for 59 years, and served as Commander. He organized the Avenue of Flags at Beverly National Cemetery, dedicated November 11, 1983. He served as Grand Marshall in the Beverly Memorial Day Parade in 2001. He appears to have died in January 2005 at age 91.
